The road to Sabang was quite scenic and turned out to be a journey on its own as we enjoyed the beautiful view of the well preserved environment and cleanliness of Puerto Princesa, which has actually gained distinction a model city – in cleanliness, environmental protection and conservation, and local governance in general (under the watch of Mayor Edward Hagedorn).

These truck-based Jeeps are one of the forms of transport from the Puerto City to Sabang. We came across a jeepload of friendly students going on a trip to the same direction as we were. Another way is to rent a van going there. Lucky for us, we were in a comfortable Kia Soul thanks to our new friends from Kia Palawan.

This was the beautiful shoreline that awaited us in Sabang just by our resort – Daluyon Beach & Mountain Resort.

Since we were in Sabang which is close to the famed Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, otherwise known as the Underground River. The park is accessible either through a 20-minute motorized boat ride or a 5-kilometer monkey trail. The Underground River is currently one of the 28 finalists for the New 7 Wonders of Nature and is really a unique experience. It was also inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The mouth of the cave alone is an awesome sight where a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees.

Inside the cave, one will see major formations of stalactites and stalagmites as well as several large chambers. Inhabitants of the cave include thousands of bats from nine different species, swiftlets and whip spiders (an ancient creature which looks like a mix of a spider and a scorpion). Fortunately we didn’t encounter any whip spider while inside the cave.
