How to spend your Labor Day weekend

Run-Bike-Drive

Labor Day is when you kick off those leather shoes and strap on your sneakers. That’s what Universal Motors Corporation (UMC) did during the recent Labor Day weekend as it hosted the Navara PurSUiT Summer Multi-Sport Challenge, gathering together eleven multi-sport teams to challenge themselves in a one-of-a-kind multi-sport event. The teams were pitted against each other in a sequence of intense running, biking and driving no ordinary vehicle but a Nissan Navara around a dirt course.

The challenge for teams was to complete three challenges, a one-kilometer run on treadmill; ride a stationary bike for two-kilometers; and finished off with driving the Navara Sport Utility Truck on a specially designed course all at the SM Mall of Asia. The team, which completes all these tasks with the best time, wins.

Multisport Teams

The grand prize consisted of 20,000 pesos cash and other prizes, which included Suunto watches, Fitness First memberships, ROX gift certificates and Nisssan Navara premium items. What a way to enjoy the Labor Day weekend!

Taking away the grand prize for the multisport showdown was Team No Boundaries (what a very familiar name), a group of mountain bikers composed of Jevis Aguila, Noel Padringon, Mike Razal, and Antonio Roldan. The group clocked in a total time of a little over nine minutes for the series of challenges.

Unfortunately, we weren’t part of that. As unfit motoring scribes, we would probably have ended up spending our weekend in the hospital if we partook in a challenge as extreme as that. We did however participate in the Nissan Navara Time Trial Challenge, finally something, which we were good at.

Media Participants

Prizes at stake for us were Canon cameras, ROX gift certificates, and Nissan Navara premium items. And so we went, we were asked to team ourselves in pairs. Most teams were formed by their media affiliations, so I paired up with Vince Pornelos, who also writes for AutoIndustriya.com. Unfortunately, we didn’t win, as we didn’t want to try to destroy the Navara as much as the others did.

Sport Utility Truck

Taking first stab at the truck was Beeboy Bargas of Top Gear who paired up with Andy Sevilla of Business Mirror, apparently Beeboy thought it wise to give the Navara some flogging and managed to record a really fast time while giving Miss Elizabeth Lee, EVP for Sales and Marketing of UMC a big scare. However, Manny Pacquiao lookalike Matt Mallari thought he’d give the truck a one-two punch himself as a prequel to the Pacquaio-Hatton match happening in two days. Paired with Jenny Bleza from Sunshine Television (Motoring Today), Mallari set the best time of 1 minute and 5 seconds edging out Bargas to win themselves the Canon digital cameras. Incidentally Jenny also won another camera in the raffle. Some people just have all the luck.

Media Winners

What’s important for me is that I actually had fun. I can’t speak for other competitive souls out there. We all walked away with Suunto sports bottles to cool ourselves for the remainder of the summer.
